Ex Cyclopedia

It began with a simple but enduring image: a pair of cyclopes envisioned as a unified duo, symbolizing connection, complementarity, and the emotional depth of human relationships. What started as a small narrative idea gradually expanded into a larger fictional universe.

The series unfolds as a nonlinear, surreal narrative composed of interconnected characters and fleeting episodes drawn from a broader, ongoing story. Rather than presenting events in sequence, Marrast publishes moments out of order, allowing each work to function as a complete visual piece while still hinting at a wider world beyond the frame. This approach preserves both narrative intrigue and the independence of each artwork.

Visually, Ex Cyclopedia reflects the artist’s deep attachment to environments — blending urban textures, steam era industrial aesthetics, elements of science fiction, and a strong love for natural and rural landscapes. Influences range from city infrastructure to countryside settings and British canal culture, all reimagined within a fictional universe. While loosely inspired by Greek mythology, these references are freely adapted, serving as cultural touchstones rather than literal retellings.
